Living In A Vacuum

A Quick Introduction

Hello friends and customers. I'm Matt Douglas, new owner of House of Vacuums in Lynchburg, VA. I purchased the business from Joe Ehlinger in December of 2017 and it has been quite an adventure getting the new operation off the ground! However, I am no Johnny-come-lately to the floorcare industry.

When I was 16 I started working for Paso Robles & Atascadero Sewing & Vacuum just north of San Luis Obispo, California as a part time job. I ended up working there all throughout college and after. In total, I was there almost 10 years. When I left, I was managing the store and had brought on the Miele, Sebo and Bosch lines of vacuums in addition to Riccar which we already carried.

I left that shop and moved to Lynchburg, Virginia in 2009 when I married my wife who had lived in Lynchburg 10 years prior to our marriage. I started down the path to a career working in higher education as a corporate trainer, first at Liberty University Online and now at the University of Virginia. However, in the back of my mind, I still wanted to own my own vacuum shop.

Why did I want to own a vacuum shop? Well, my wife would tell you it is because I'm a weirdo... which is true. But there is also something about it that gets in your blood. It is one of the only true, small town, mom & pop retail spaces that still thrives in this day of faceless corporate saturation. I love interacting with people. I also love meeting their needs with a vacuum or a service that best suits them and their home. It is simple, but there is something incredibly rewarding about it.

So I find myself back in the floorcare industry, selling the exact same lines I had in California with Riccar and Miele and building on my previous 10 years of experience. My father, Rex, now runs the day-to-day and I continue to commute to UVA everyday, in addition to working at the shop after hours. Someday I'll be able to move to the vac shop full time, but until then I spend every moment I'm not at my day-job working on House of Vacuums. I have big plans for this business and I hope you'll be a part of it!

Next time, we'll profile my father, Rex. He is an incredibly talented mechanic and all around good guy. His face will most likely be the one you see when you come into the store, so I want you to get to know him!

If you have any vacuum or floorcare questions, please feel free to email me at, I would love to hear from you!

Keeping it Clean,

Matt Douglas
